Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce flow resistance of a solvent in a polysulfone separation membrane for use in ultrafiltration, by forming the supporting layer of the membrane in a structure of tube bundle in manufacturing it by a wet method.
CONSTITUTION: A tubular membrane having, e.g. 2mm inside diameter is produced from a dimethyl formamide solution containing, e.g. 15wt% polysulfone resin using a polyelectrolyte-containing aqueous coagulant and tubular nozzles. A supporting layer for supporting an extremely thin barrier layer has a structure of tube bundle, each tube being adjacent to each other and almost perpendicular to the membrane face in the part near the membrane, so having low flow resistance against a solvent passing through the barrier layer. Since the sizes of the tubes having the tube bundle structure are almost uniform in the part near the membrane, the sections of the tubes parallel to the membrane face are almost uniform, thus permitting superior water permeability to be obtained and residues stuck to the membrane face to be easily removed by washing with water without using a chemical agent in order to recover filtration efficiency.
