Abstract

PURPOSE:To separate and remove polychlorinated biphenyls in a short time with good separation efficiency with small-scale equipment by utilizing microwave irradiation for the gasification of the impregnated polychlorinated biphenyls. CONSTITUTION:Microwaves are irradiated to electrical parts, such as capacitor elements, transformer cores and the like, impregnated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB). Then, PCB of trivalent-pentad in particular are larger in dipole moment as compared to others and therefore it preferentially vibrates, thereby evolving heat and gasifying. If Al exists, the evolution of heat by the eddy current generated by this increases to effectively heat the same. If there is an insulating paper, this is heated as well, but since it carbonizes after gasification of the PCB, the adsorption of the PCB on the insulating paper per se of which carbonization has progressed does not occur.
