Abstract

PURPOSE:To secure the discharge breakdown, as well as a rapid transfer to arc discharge by using a positive-characteristic thermistor as a current-limiting resistance which is connected in series to a pulse generator. CONSTITUTION:A starting circuit, which is connected between main electrodes 3a 3b, is a searial circuit consisting of a current-limiting resistance 5, a glow starter 6 and a closed bimetal switch 7. The starting circuit is connected parallel to a luminous tube 2. An auxiliary electrode 4 is connected to the end of the glow starter 6 by means of a starting auxiliary resistance 8 placed between the electrode 4 and the starter 6, and the whole constitutes a metal halide lamp. The metal halide lamp is connected to a power source 11 by means of a single-choke stabilizer 10. The current-limiting resistance 5 is a ceramic-type positive-characteristic thermistor. Consequently, the resistance value of the current-limiting resistance 5 becomes small and thereby glow discharge is secured during starting, while the resistance value of the resistance 5 becomes large and thereby the electric current flowing into the glow starter 6 becomes small during lighting.
