CONSTITUTION:Electrodes 3 are sealed with polycrystalline alumina caps 2 provided with electric lead pipes 4 on both ends of a polycrystalline alumina ceramic tube 1a to form a luminous tube 1 of a high pressure sodium lamp, and sodium, mercury, and a rare gas such as xenon are sealed in the tube 1a. When a pressure of the rare gas is 100 Torr or more, and rho and E are determined so that the equation I and II are satisfied where rho is the weight fraction of sodium to the total weight of sodium and mercury, and E is the mean voltage gradient of the luminous tube 1. Thus the color rendering properties are improved to Ra=40-70, and the efficiency is improved greatly.
