Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled polymer which enhances surface hardness of glass, paper, etc. or imparts water repellency to them when the polymer is coated on the surface thereof, by a method wherein an aq. soln. of silicic acid is modified under an alkaline condition and ajusted to an acidic state, and then the resulting product is reacted with an organosilylating agent as quick as possible.
CONSTITUTION: An aq. soln. of silicic acid obtd. e.g. by neutralizing water glass with sulfuric acid, is kept under an alkaline condition of a pH of 9W11 at 10W80°C for 1minW8hr to effect the polym. of silicic acid. The reaction mixt. is subjected to an acidic state having a pH of 5 or below, pref. 0.4W3.5 by the addition of sulfuric acid. Within 10min after the pH adjustment, pref. immediately, the resulting reaction mixt. is reacted with an organosilylating agent (e.g. trimethylchlorosilane or diphenylchlorosilane) in an amount of 0.2W2.0mol per mole of silicic acid by using a mixed solvent of a polar org. solvent (e.g. methanol) and water in a vol. ratio of 0.2W2.0 to produce the desired high-molecular organosilicon polymer which is soluble in org. solvents and has a sharp molecular-weight distribution.
