Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:The title compound of formula I [X1 and X2 are H, lower alkyl groups, or >C=C<; Y is -(CH2)n-, (n is 0,1, or 4), -CH2CH=CHCH2-].
EXAMPLE: 2-(Hexahydroisoindolinyl)-methylenebisphosphonic acid.
USE: Herbicides for foliar treatment having prolonged actions with low toxicity to men and cattle, only after germination without need of redusting.
PROCESS: A mixture of equimolar amounts of phosphorus trichloride and phosphorous acid is refluxed at 50W60°C to have hydrochloric acid eliminated. A formyl compound of formula II is added to coagulate the reaction mixture, and heated at 30W70°C for several hr. The coagulated reaction product is hydrolyzed with water to give the compound of formula I.
