Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain anhydrous sodium carbonate easy to handle and having high bulk specific gravity and hardness by holding an aq. soln. of sodium carbonate at a temp. 3W7°C above the transition temp. of sodium carbonate monohydrate in the presence of NaCl.
CONSTITUTION: 10W22 wt% of NaCl is added to an aq. soln. of sodium carbonate, and the soln. is held at a temp. 3W7°C above the transition temp. of sodium carbonate monohydrate into anhydrous sodium carbonate to induce the transition, thus obtaining anhydrous sodium carbonate. The raw material monohydrate may be formed by hydrating light ashes obtd. by calcining crude sodium bicarbonate of Solvay process or an ammonium chloride concurrent production process. An electrolyte from diaphragm method NaCl electrolysis may be carbonated with carbon dioxide or sodium bicarbonate, and the carbonated electrolyte can directly be supplied to an anhydrous salt transition vessel since it contains NaCl.
