Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve the strength of a magnetic layer and the run operation and durability of a magnetic tape by improving the dispersibility of magnetic powder in the magnetic layer by dipping magnetic powder in a solution a styrene-maleic acid copolymer derivative and by making magnetic powder adsorb the copolymer derivative.
CONSTITUTION: In a solution of not less than 1wt% of a polymer surfactant of 2000W20000 in average molecular weight of a styrene-maleic acid copolymer derivative shown by formula [I] and magnetic powder, magnetic powder is dipped to adsorb the above-mentioned surfactant. After this magnetic powder is taken out and dried, a magnetic coating obtained by dispersing it in a solution containing a binder [copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate and hardner (urethane resin, etc.)] is applied on a base body of a polyester film, etc., and dried to manufacture a magnetic tape. In this way, binding capacity between the magnetic powder and binder is strengthened without leaching the surfactant from the tape surface.
