Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare serine in high yield without using complicated processes, by reacting glycine directly with formaldehyde in the presence of a platinum-containing catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Glycine (e.g. free glycine, hydrochloric acid salt of glycine, etc.) is reacted with formaldehyde (e.g. aqueous formaldehyde solution, trioxane, etc.) in an aqueous medium, e.g. water, etc., at room temperatures to 200°C usually for 1W20hr in the presence of a platinum-containing catalyst (e.g. platinum metal, platinum oxide, etc.). After the completion of the reaction, the catalyst is separated only by a mechanical means, to give the reaction solution containing serine. Preferably the concentration of glycine in the aqueous medium is 0.1W20wt% and that of formaldehyde in the aqueous solution is 0.1W20wt%. The amount of the catalyst is preferably 0.1W10wt%.
USE: A synthetic raw material for various physioactive substance, and raw materials for amino acid derivatives. In particular, one of the important raw materials for the production of tryptophan.
