Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce fibrous activated carbon having superior adsorption, catalyst and fiber performances by oxidation-treating polyacrylonitrile type fiber contg. a specified additive followed by activation.
CONSTITUTION: To a polyacrylonitrile type polymer having an acrylonitrile content of about 80wt% or more is added 0.03W2wt% of one or more kinds of additives selected from TiO2, silica and alumina having a specific surface area of about 5m2/g or more and a diameter of about 1μ or less, and by spinning the polymer polyacrylonitrile type fiber is obtd. This fiber is then oxidation-treated in air at about 200W300°C for about 0.5W20hr to bond oxygen by 50W90% of the satd. bond quantity, and it is activated by heating at about 700W1000°C in an atmosphere of an activating gas such as steam or carbon dioxide for about 10W200min to allow 0.06W10wt% of the additives to be contained in the fibrous activated carbon.
