Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable a fusion welder to be carried to an arbitrary place while a laser light source is held fixed and fusion connection to be accomplished by interposing a flexible infrared optical guide of low losses between the laster light source and fiber fusion welder. CONSTITUTION:Laser beam 2 from a CO2 laser light source 1 is confined in an optical guide 3 and is left up to a fiber fusion welder 4. The optical guide 3 is made of a freely bendable and flexible material and is made to have extremely low losses, thus the beam 2 is led up to a far distant arbitrary position with virtually no attenuation. Hence, it gives the same effect that it is substantially disconnected from the light source 1, thus the fusion welding of fibers may be accomplished by keeping the large-size light source fixed and carrying the small-size and lightweight fusion welder. The beam 2 fuses the end parts 9, 9' of fibers 8, 8' through a focusing lens 6 when the shutter 5 of the fusion welder 4 is opened, whereby mutual connection is accomplished.
