Abstract

PURPOSE: To ensure an effective elimination of the picture noise by calculating the mean density and the highest density of the plural number of picture elements in the designated region and using them as the necessary information only when they satisfy the fixed conditions to the fixed threshold level.

CONSTITUTION: Video signal Si is digitized through A/D converter 1 and then supplied to system Q for standardization as well as to system R for comparison and operation. System Q comprises arithmetic circuit 2, shift registers 3 and 5 plus standardization arithmetic circuit 4. Here the mean density of each line and the highest density of the preceding line are calculated and then stored in register 5 through standardization as the black and white when larger and smaller than the set threshold level respectively. On the other hand, system R comprises shift register 6, mean value arithmetic circuit 7, maximum value arithmetic circuit 8 and comparison control circuit 9 each, and carries out the necessary operation for system Q. As a result, the picture signal region is defined in case both the mean and maximum value are not smaller than the threshold level, and otherwise the region where no picture signal exists is defined to be turned into O forcedly and thus to extract the picture signal. In such way, the picture noise can be prevented without lowering the resolution.
