Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:A lactam alcohol of formula I.
EXAMPLE: 1-R-α-Methylbenzyl-2-hydroxy-S-oxo-piperidine.
USE: An intermediate for antihistamine alkaloid.
PROCESS: An imide compound of formula II is reacted with a reducing agent in the presence of a catalytic amount of an acid to give the objective compound of of formula I. The imide compound can be obtained by reacting glutaric anhydride with α-methylbenzylamine. Optically active R- or S-α-methylbenzylamine as the amine provides the corresponding optically active compound of formula II. Respective diastereomers can be obtained for the carbon atom at the 2-position having a hydroxyl group.
