Abstract
PURPOSE: "to shorten the tape position detection time and make the recording and reproducing heads long-life by providing plural pairs of recording tracks and reproducing heads for a magnetic tape and setting one recoring track for tape position detection.
CONSTITUTION: Eight tracks 2a to 2h are provided on a magnetic tape, and recording and reproducing heads 3a to 3h are provided correspondingly to respective tracks, and track 2a is set for tape position detection. Then, after a tape position where information should be recorded or reproduced is detected by recording and reproducing head 3a at an information recording and reproducing time, residual recording and reproducing heads are selected to record and reproduce information. As a result, magnetic tape 2 can be prevented from being long even in case of a large information volume, and the tape position detection for information recording and reproducing can be performed surely in a comparatively short time, and further, the mechanical life of the recording and reproducing head can be made long.
