Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as perfumes and solvents industrially advantageously by extracting phenylacetaldehyde (P), formed through oxidation of styrene in an aqueous polyoxyethylene glycol, and by vacuum distillation of the hydrogenated P.
CONSTITUTION: (D) styrene is oxidized in an aqueous solution comprising (A) palladium (or its salt), (B) cupric chloride, and (C) about 20W75wt% of a polyoxyethylene glycol of the formula (R1 and R2 are H or 1W5C alkyl groups; n is about 10W100). The reaction mixture is extracted with a solvent to separate phenylacetaldehyde, which is hydrogenated in the presence of a catalyst. After removal of the catalyst, the reaction mixture is distilled in vacuo to give the objective compound. The raffinate is partly oxidized and returned to the next reaction mixture. Preferably, the concentrations of (A), (B), and total chloride ions are 0.01W 0.50mol/l, 0.02W2.0mol/l, and 0.1W5g equivalents/l, respectively.
