Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce remarkably the treating tims so as to increase considerably the production efficiency, by heating rapidly the material to be heat-treated in the air to the austenitizing temp., by enveloping immediately the material with cooling medium to isolate the material from air and to cool the material to a constant heat treatment temp., then by keeping the material at the temp for a prescribed time.
CONSTITUTION: A material to be treated, e.g., a test piece made of SK 5 of 9ϕ× 40h, is heat-treated at a constant temp. That is, the test piece is quiclky heated by high frequency heating to the austenitizing temp., or 950°C for from several sec. to several tens of sec., for example, 15 sec. Upon reaching the temp., a cooling medium, e.g., water is sprayed on the test piece so as to envelope completely the test piece and to cool the test piece to about 400°C. Then the test piece is maintained at 400°C as it is enveloped with cooling medium and is heated for 30 sec. by simultaneous control of the amount of the spraying cooling medium and of the output of the high frequency heater. Thereafter, the high frequency heating and the cooling with a cooling medium are discontinued, and the test piece is air-cooled to complete the heating cycle.
