Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title gypsum of a desired crystal shape by seperating a process for dissolving raw material gypsum such as gypsum, hemihydrate gypsum or an hydous gypsum and a process for precipitating α-type hemihydrate gypsum and by controlling the amt. of the raw material gypsum dissolved in a soln. to be introduced into the precipitation process.
CONSTITUTION: A solvent in flask 3 is evaporated, and the vapor is liquefied by cooling in condenser 2, drops onto raw material gypsum 4, and stays in extraction tube 1 to slowly dissolve gypsum 4. Next the solvent returns into flask 3 through bypass pipe 6. By repeating such solvent reflux the amt. of gypsum 4 dissolved in the solvent in flask 3 gradually increases to accelerate hydrothermal reaction. The gypsum begins to precipitate as α-type hemihydrate fibrous gypsum through a supersaturation state. By controlling the supersaturation degree according to the kind of the solvent, etc. the shape of fibrous crystals of the resulting α-type hemihydrate gypsum is selected arbitrarily. This product is utilized as a reinforcing filler, a noncombustible material (board), a heat insulating material, etc.
