Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare prismatic large crystals of cephalothin sodium salt having a broad antibacterial spectrum, in high yield and purity, by adding a methanol solution of cephalothin free acid to a solvent containing sodium acetate in two stages.
CONSTITUTION: Cephalothin free acid [7-(2-thienylacetamido)-3-acetoxy-3-cephem- 4-carboxylic acid] is dissolved in hot methanol, and added to a methanol/water mixture containing sodium acetate while heating, and cooled slowly to complete the first stage crystallization. A methanol solution saturated with sodium acetate is added to the above crystallized dispersion, and the remaining methanol solution of cephalothin free acid is added thereto to obtain prismatic large crystals having a width of 10W100μ and length of 230W1100μ. The crystals can be filtered easily, and easily formed to tablets, etc.
