Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the title saponified product in high yield with little catalyst residue and impurities, by saponification of an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer in a specific solvent in the presence of an alkali, distilling part of the solvent off, adding water, emulsifying at a temperature above the softening point of the saponified product, and then lowering the temperature of the system.
CONSTITUTION: A saponification of A) 100 parts by wt. of an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (containing 5W35 wt.% of vinyl acetate) is carried out in an alkaline condition by adding B) at least 150 parts by wt. of a mixed solvent of an aromatic hydrocarbon and a lower alcohol and C) an alkali such as sodium methoxide to the component A). This is followed by addition, if required, of D) an unsaturated carboxylic acid or a cyclic acid anhydride to carry out reaction, and the solvent is distilled off until its amount in the system reduces to 10W100 parts by wt. based on 100 parts by wt. of the saponified product. Then, E) 200 parts by wt. of water is added and the resulting system is emulsified at a temperature above the softening point of the saponified product and then the temperature of the system is lowered below the softening point while stirring, thus obtaining the objective product.
