Abstract
PURPOSE: A novel bacterium belonging to Streptomyces is aerobically cultured and the culavulanic acid accumulated in the culture medium is separated and purified, whereby the objective acid useful as an antibacterial substance is economically obtained with advantage.
CONSTITUTION: A novel bacterium belonging to Streptomyces, P 6621 (FERM- 2804), is aerobically cultured in an enriched medium, for example, by shaking culture or aerating culture method, at a temperature of about 18W30°C for about 40W75hr. Then, the culavulanic acid formed and accumulated in the culture medium is adsorbed on activated carbon and eluted with an aqueous solvent such as methanol or ethanol. Further, the culavulanic acid is isolated and purified by an appropriate combination of adsorption and elution with ion-exchange resin, gel- filtration, column chromatography and others.
