Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain sulfonic gp.-contg. fluorinated cation-exchange membrane which is tough and has high ion-exchange capacity, by a method wherein a membrane is produced from a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and a specific sulfur- contg. fluorinated vinyl ether, and subjected to oxidation, halogenation and/or hydrolysis.
CONSTITUTION: A sulfur-contg. fluorinated vinyl ether of formula (wherein k is 0,1; l is 3W5; X is DR1, SO2R2; R1 is 1W10C alkyl, aryl, Cl, 1W10C perfluoroalkyl; R2 is R1, F or OM; M is H, matal, NH4) is copolymerized with CF2=CF2 in the presence of a free-radical initiator. The resulting copolymer is molded into a membrane. When X is SR1, the membrane is halogenated with Cl2 and then hydrolyzed under alkali conditions to introduced SO3H gp. When X is SO2F, the membrane is hydrolyzed under alkali conditions to convert SO2F to SO3M. In this way, there are obtd. membranes which have good chemical resistance and heat resistance and can be used under high current density conditions.
