Abstract

PURPOSE:A lubricating oil additive, capable of imparting improved oiliness and abrasion resistance to an oil for plastic working of metals, and comprising a copolymer of an alpha-olefin and an alpha,beta-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid alkyl ester with a low polymerization degree. CONSTITUTION:(A) A 4-60C alpha-olefin is copolymerized with (B) a 1-18C dialkyl ester of an alpha,beta-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, preferably maleic acid in a molar amount of 1-2 times that of (A) while adding a free-radical initiator in portions by the solution or solventless polymerization method to give a copolymer having a weight-average molecular weight of 1,000-20,000. Preferably, the solution polymerization is carried out in an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent at 60-140 deg.C for 3-8hr; the solventless polymerization, in the presence of 0.01-0.1mol of a radical transfer agent, e.g. lauryl mercaptan, based on (B) or with a polymerization temperature increase of 100-200 deg.C. USE:A synthetic lubricating oil.
