Abstract

PURPOSE:To make switching easy and eliminate the need for any electric power at the time of holding the optical fibers after switching by maintaining the switching position by internal permanent magnets and letting the switching action be done by an external magnet. CONSTITUTION:To let light enter an optical fiber 2 from a movable optical fiber 1, an external magnet 10 is approached to the outer side of an internal permanent magnet 9 to attract a magnetic material 12 and accurate positioning is done by a stopper 11. If the external magnet 10 is kept apart from the internal permanent magnet 9 after the movable optical fiber 1 has moved or if the electric current is turned OFF when the external magnet 10 is constituted by an electromagnet, the movable optical fiber 1 is maintained in the state after the movement by the internal permanent magnet 9. To let light enter an optical fiber 3, the external magnet 10 is approached to an internal permanent magnet 9'. With such constitution, the switch may be made into hermetic type by a case 13 and it is also possible to seal a refractive index matching agent 14 into the case 13.
