Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare modified starch, excellent in thickening and coagulating properties over a wide PH range, and also in tackifying and adhesive properties, by the graft-polymerization of an anionic etherified and/or an anionic esterified starch, to an anionic monomer.
CONSTITUTION: Starch is reacted with an Anionizing agent such as monochloroacetic or orthophosphoric acid in an organic solvent-water system, in the presence of NaOH, to obtain an anionic etherified and/or anionic esterified starch. Then the modified starch is graft-polymerized with an anionic monomer such as (meth)acrylic acid, vinylsulfonic acid, in an organic solvent, in the presence of a graft-polymerization initiator, at 0W95°C, to obtain a graft-modified starch, which has at least one anionic substituent selected from carboxylates, sulfonates and phosphates, on both its skeletonal polymer and graft side chain.
