Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a plastic material, excellent in transparency and mechanical properties, by polymerizing a mixture of a vinyl monomer and an organic acid containing a dibasic carboxylic acid monoester in the presence of a lead compound.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture composed of 10W94pts.wt. of a least one vinyl monmer (A), selected from 1W4C alkyl group-containing alkyl methacrylate, alkyl acrylate, hydroxyalkyl methacrylate, hydroxyalkyl acrylate and styrene, and 90W 6pts.wt. of an organic acid containing a dibasic carboxylic acid monoester of the formula (wherein R1 and R2 represent 1W7C hydrocarbon groups), is polymerized in the presence of a lead compound. The amount of lead contained in the polymer is restricted by the amount of the organic acid used. Althrough the radiation shielding effect is larger with higher lead content, it is preferable to allow the polymer to contain ≤0.5mol of lead per mol of the total organic acid (B) used.
