Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce cyanides and NOx contents efficiently to be free from pollution, by allowing the gas containing cyanides and NOx to contact with a catalyst consisting essentially of oxide of Cr or Cu and Ti oxide at elevated temperature.
CONSTITUTION: Exhaust gas 1 is passed through a heat exchanger 2 and is introduced into a reactor 3 filled with catalyst consisting essentially of Ti oxide and Cr or Cu oxide. Cyanides and NOx in the exhaust gas are caused to react on said catalyst to reduce these harmful components to be free from pollution. When the temperature of exhaust gas 1 is low, the exhaust gas temperature is raised by means of an auxiliary burner using auxiliary fuel 4 such as heavy oil. When the exhaust gas 1 contains combustible substances such as CO and hydrocarbons besides said components, the gas is introduced into a reactor 3' filled with a catalyst for complete oxidation, and the combustible substances in the gas are burnt completely to purify the gas. Meanwhile, the contact temperature within the reactor 3 may be 450°C or less in the case of Cr-Ti catalyst, or about 350°C or less in the cast of Cu-Ti catalyst.
