Abstract
PURPOSE: A mutant from Mycobacterium microorganism is cultured in a medium containing sterol as the substrate to collect androstane compounds formed.
CONSTITUTION: A mutant that belongs to Mycobacterium diernhoferi and has lost the enzyme decomposing androstane or contains it in activity-reduced, form, which is included enzyme in the wild mold in high active form, e.g., Mycobacterium diernhoferi MCI-1298 and 1299 (FERM-4927 and 4928), is cultured in a substrate containing a sterol compound selected from sterol, its C-3 ester, and ether derivatives and their oxidative intermediates to produce androstane.
