Abstract

PURPOSE:To impart free cutting to required portions without impairing the strength and toughness of the base material by applying sulphurizing to the surface to be machined of a preform then hot-forging the same. CONSTITUTION:Sulfide powder of one or more kinds selected from W, Mo, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Co, Pb is coated on the surface to be machined of the powder hot- forged preform. Thence, it is heated to decompose the sulfides and let them sulphurized in the pores on the surface of the preform. Thence, the preform is hot- forged to the shape close to an intended shape. This treatment reduces the deformation resistance at the machining on account of the role of chip breakers owing to the presence of the sulfides and the decrease in the mechanical strength owing to the appearance of FeS.
