Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to accurately detect reference signals with respect to main signals by substituting a portion of the main signal band on a main scale plate by a reference signal band thereby to form an index scale plate in which the reference signal band and the main signal band are coupled into one.
CONSTITUTION: A main scale plate 1 to be used in a photoelectric encoder of transmission type is formed at a preset period with a plurality of reference signal bands B which are arranged in the main signal bands A composed of equidistantly spaced bright and dark patterns and which are made to have different patterns from the bands A. On the other hand, an index scale plate 2 for reading purpose is formed in series along the direction of movement of the main scale plate 1 with both an index scale b for the reference signals, which has the same pattern as that of the band B of scale plate 1, and an index scale a for the main signals, which has the same pattern as that of the bands A. And, the scale b has the same lenght of the pitch number as that of the band B, whereas the length of the scale a is made longer than that of the reference signals.
