Abstract

PURPOSE: To selectively produce H2 and CO at low temperatures, by adding an alkali (alkaline earth) metal compound to a solid or liquid fuel, and effecting the gasification of the fuel in two separate stages under specific conditions.
CONSTITUTION: To a solid or liquid fuel such as coal or heavy oil, there is added 10W1,000wt% of an alkali (alkaline earth) metal compound such as NaOH or KCl. The resulting mixture is gasified either by continuously raising the temperature of the mixture from 300°CW1,000°C, or by stepwise heating, i.e., from 300 to 600°C and a gas comprising a major proportion of CO is produced in the temperature range in the 1st stage and from 800 to 1,000°C in the 2nd stage. A gas comprising major proportion of H2 is produced in the temperature range of 300W600°C of 800W 1,000°C .
