Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce frictional force between the first and second seal rings in the case when the first seal ring gets into the second seal ring due to the wear of the seal rings, by a method wherein the diameters of inside and outside cylindrical surfaces of seal rings are each set larger or smaller at position in proportion with a distance from a sealing end face.
CONSTITUTION: A seal ring 3 is spring-biased from a fixed case toward a seal ring 9 rotating with a shaft 1, and a mechanical seal is constituted of the end face of a cylindrical portion 11 of the ring 9 and the end face of the ring 3 faced thereto. The outside peripheral surface 13 of the portion 11 has a larger diameter at position farther from an end face S, while the inside peripheral surface 14 has a smaller diameter at position farther from the end face S. Therefore, even when the wear of the sealing end faces proceeds, frictional surface is substantially limited to the end face S only, operating power does not increase, there is no risk of overheating or seizure, and the use life of the mechanical seal is elongated.
