Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the color tones, transparency, inclusions, etc. of various kinds of gemstone for natural gems and enable industrially easy production by replacing part of all of the Y of garnet structure Y3Al5O12 with one or more kinds of the rare earth elements to form a specified compsn.
CONSTITUTION: Part or all of the Y lattices of colorless transparent garnet structure Y3Al5O12 is replaced with one or more kinds of the rare earth elements (M) about equal to Y in ionic radius to satisfy the following structural formula: Y3-xMxAl5O12 (where 0<x≤3). Thus, a body color peculiar to the replacing element can be assumed, and in order to adjust the delicate color tone and transparency 0.001W 1wt% of one or more out of Cr, Co, Ti, Mn, Ni, Ca, V and Fe is added as auxiliary components. This single crystal body has a Mohs' hardness of 8.5 and is harder than crystal and spinel. It is suitable for use as a gem.
