Abstract

PURPOSE: To simultaneously polarize a piezoelectric element in different directions by applying different DC voltages to two opposing partial electrodes and establishing a potential difference between another partial electrode and the two opposing partial electrodes.
CONSTITUTION: A piezo-electric transformer 1 is provided in a drive unit 2, DC power supplies V1 and V2 are connected to partial electrodes 4 and 5, respectively, and a partial electrode 6 of a generator 3 is grounded. In this arrangement, when DC voltages v1 and v2 are applied from the power supplies V1 and V2, to the respective electrodes 4 and 5, voltages v1 and -v2 are applied in the thickness direction of the drive unit 2 to effect polarization in the direction designated by the arrow a in the drive unit 2, and polarization is also effected in the direction designated by the arrow b in the generator 3. It is noted that the electrode 6 is not grounded but is connected to another DC power supply to apply a DC voltage v3, whereby the potential difference between the voltages v1, v2 and the voltage v3 establishes an electric field in the longitudinal direction.
