Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a discrimation processing method capable of making a complex logical decision easily and effectively.
CONSTITUTION: Characters short in longitudinal height or characters with writing positions in frames used as information for discrimination are classified into the 1st group of discrimination characters by rough classification part 2 and characters in an equivalent group are discriminated by discrimination part 3; when it is decided that they do not correspond to the 1st group, positions, sizes and inclinations of the characrers are normalized. Next, characters narrow in width or characters with straight strokes in their center are classified into the 2nd group of discrimination characters by rough classification processing part 6; and equivalent characters are discriminated by discrimination part 7 and unmeet characters are normalized in terms of character width. In this stage, discrimination processing is carried out directly or after a suitable category is roughly selected by using the distance dicision results of reference pattern memory unit 10 which calculates the distance between a reference pattern stored in reference pattern memory unit 11 and an unkown character, when all characters can not be discriminated easily, thereby discriminating characters as to remaining character categories.
