Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide an alloy with superior high temp. hardness, thermal impact resistance and lead oxide corrosion resistance for engine valves and valve seats of an internal combustion engine by adding an esp. large amt. of Ni to a Co base alloy.
CONSTITUTION: A Co alloy consisting of, by wt., C 1.0W3.5%, Si 0.1W2.0%, Mn 0.1W2.0%, W 5W20%, Cr 20W40%, Ni 25W50%, and the balance Co and inevitable impurities or further contg. Fe 1W30% and/or Mo 2W9%. This alloy is obtd. by adding Ni to a conventional Co alloy to such a degree that a lowering in high temp. hardness is not induced, and coexistence of Ni and Cr esp. improves the thermal impact resistance and lead oxide corrosion resistance of the alloy. Accordingly, when this alloy is used as a material for an electrode for build-up welding or engine valve and valve seat castings, desired characteristics are satisfied.
