Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce fibrous calcium potassium silicate useful as an ion exchanger by charging potassium silicate and a water sol. calcium cpd. in a specified ratio followed by hydrothermal reaction.
CONSTITUTION: Potassium silicate and a water sol. calcium cpd. such as calcium hydroxide, calcium oxide or calcium chloride are charged into a hermetically sealed container so that charge coefficient T calculated according to equation I or II becomes 1W2.5 and the value of X/Z 1.5W6. They are then subjected to hydrothermal reaction at about 150W250°C for about 10W20 hr under press. to obtain crystalline (needle crystal) fibrous calcium potassium silicate with a fiber length of about 20W300 μ and an aspect ratio of about 50W200 represented by formular III (m=0W20). Equations I and II are used when a by-product potassium salt is formed and is not formed, respectively, and in the equations X is the mole no. of K2O, Y is the mol no. of SiO2 and Z is the mol no. of CaO.
