Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the read rate for small characters by taking out a signal pattern reduced by a pack circuit and a signal pattern, which is not reduced, for the size of a detected character larger and smaller than a prescribed value respectively.
CONSTITUTION: A character is converted to a signal pattern by photoelectric conversion part 12, and noise is eliminated from the output by 14, and the output is led to pack circuit 15 to reduce the signal pattern to 1/N in respect to the area ratio. Then, detection circuit 18 detects the size of the character on a basis of this reduced signal pattern and designates to take out the reduced signal pattern and the signal pattern, which is not reduced, by circuit 15 for the detected size of the character larger and smaller than a prescribed value respectively, and they are selected by gate circuit 19. Here, the signal pattern selected by circuit 19 is recognized by recognition circuit 20; and when the signal pattern cannot be recognized by circuit 20, circuit 18 is operated to perform re-scanning. Thus, the character read rate for small characters can be improved.
