Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare α-hydroxy iron hydroxide suitable for a material of powdery magnetic iron hydroxide for magnetic recording medium through addition of a solution of ferric salt to a caustic alkaline solution until a specified value of pH is obtained and subsequent aging of the reacting liquid with the value of pH maintained.
CONSTITUTION: A specified amount of a solution of ferric salt, such as ferric sulfate, ferric chlorate and ferric nitrate, with a concentration of 0.5 mol/l or less is added to a high concentration alkaline solution of NaOH or KOH slowly with stirring until the pH of the reacting liquid after the addition reaches 10.5 to 12.5. Then, the reacting liquid containing the resulting precipitate is allowed to stand at room temperature for about 200 hours for aging. Consequently, the crystallization of uniform α-FeOOH excellent in needle property is observed. The aging time herein may be shortened according to the temperature of heating. For example, the aging can be performed at 80°C or less for ferric sulfate of ferric chlorate and 60°C or less for ferric nitrate.
