Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce proper magnesium orthocarbonate crystals in a stable and easy manner by allowing an aq. soln. of MgCl2 or MgSO4 and an aq. soln. of (NH4)2CO3 or Na2CO3 to react while holding a predetermined temp., such a retention time and such a concn. of a slurry of magnesium orthocarbonate clystals.
CONSTITUTION: A 10W30 wt% aq. soln. of MgCl2 or MgSO4 and a 15W50 wt% aq. soln. of (NH4)2CO3 or Na2CO3 are allowed to react under the following conditions: both the solns. are mixed so that the molar ratio of CO2- 3/Mg2+ becomes 1W1.5, the reaction deposition zone is kept at 30W70°C and pH 7W9.5, the retention time is controlled to 15W180 min, the concn. of a slurry of magnesium orthocarbonate crystals is held at 3W20 wt%, and needle-like prismatic crystals of 2W 20 μ in width and 50W 300 μ in length are continuously deposited. The resulting magnesium orthocarbonate crystals can be converted into basic magnesium carbonate with superior performance as filler for rubber in an easy and reliable manner.
