Abstract
PURPOSE: To detect the break points of optical fibers with a simple device by using a semiconductor laser.
CONSTITUTION: A semiconductor laser 2 connected to a constant current source 3, a photo detector 4 and a variable frequency selecting amplifier 5 are subsequently arrayed to the end face of an optical fiber 1. Then, when the output laser lights 2-1, 2-2 being radiated from both end faces of the semiconductor laser 2 which is constant current driven by th constant current source 3 are cast to the input end face of the optical fiber 1 to be measured 1 and the photo detector 4, the output laser light 2-1 is transmitted in the fiber and part thereof is radiated rightword at the end face (break point) and part thereof becomes reflected wave and propagated to the input side in the fiber. This reflected wave enters the active layer of the semiconductor 2 and part thereof is again emitted as the output laser light 2-1. Hence, it assumes the form in which the light output of the semiconductor laser 2 has been modulated. By detecting the output laser light 2-2 with the photo detector 4 and measuring and detecting the frequency, the distance from the fiber input end up to the break point is calculated.
