CONSTITUTION: In a rotary piston engine, in which a rot or 4 executes planetary excursion within a space defined by a rotor housing 2 and side housings 1 closing the opposite sides of the rotor housing, the side housings 1 are made of cast iron such as FCH-1, FCH-2, FCD45 and FCD55 or steel such as SACM1, SCR4 and S55, with a Fe-C-N system compound layer formed on the surface of the material to a thickness of 0.1μ or above by a soft nitrification treatment. Also, the side seals 5 are formed by plating the frictional surface of an iron base with chromium to a thickness of 20μ or above to improve the wear resistance and other characteristics.
