Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a cationic aqueous dispersion composition capable of imparting sizing effect and improved strength to paper, by radical copolymerization of a vinyl ester of a tertiary carboxylic acid, and a cation undonative α,β-ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of absence of a cation donative monomer.
CONSTITUTION: Radical copolymerization of (C) 10W90wt.% of a vinyl ester of a tertiary carboxylic acid of formula (R1, R2, and R3 are hydrocarbon groups, the sum of the carbon numbers of them is ≥ 3) and (D) 90W10wt.% of a cation undonative α,β- ethylenically unsaturated monomer, is carried out in the presence or absence of (A) a cation donative monomer, e.g. vinylpyridine, or (B) a cationic water-soluble or water-dispersible oligomer and/or polymer, by using (E) a cation donative catalyst, if necessary.
