Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily obtain a damping alloy with superior damping capacity, corrosion resistance and weather resistance by subjecting both sides of a substrate made of iron or its alloy to aiffusion-penetration treatment with Cr and/or Al to form damping alloy layers. CONSTITUTION:Both sides of iron or its alloy 1 contg. C<=0.1wt% are subjected to diffusion-penetration treatment with Cr, Al or Cr-Al to form damping alloy layers 2 consisting of Al; 1-8wt% and/or Cr; 2-30wt% and the balance Fe. A surface protecting layer of high Cr, Al or Cr-Al content may be formed on each surface of layers 2. The metal density distribution can be controlled easily by carrying out the treatment in the following two steps; a penetration process in which the substrate is buried in the predetermined mixed powder and heated, and a diffusion process in which it is heated in a vaccum or the like.
