Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a water-soluble coating resin having uniform qualities and giving coating films having excellent properties, by depolymerizing a high molecular weight linear polyester in the presence of a polyvalent alcohol and/or carboxylic acid, followed by neutralizing and making water-soluble.
CONSTITUTION: (1)(A) A linear polyester having a molecular weight of 2×104W 106 is prepared by polycondensing a dicarboxylic acid (e.g. terephthalic acid, etc.) with a glycol (e.g.ethylene glycol, etc.). (2) The polyester (A) is depolymerized at 210W280°C under atmospheric or increased pressure in the presence of a 2 or more. valent alcohol and/or carboxylic acid, wherein OH/COOH is 1W10. (3) If necessary, an acid anhydride (e.g. phthalic anhydride, etc.) is added and made to react with the above product preferably at 100W200°C. (4) A neutralizing agent (e.g. ammonia, etc.) (0.5W2 equivalent on the vasis of 1 equivalent of the carboxyl group in the polymer) is further added to neutralize the above product and to give a water-soluble polyester resin.
