Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare primary amines in high yields in a short time, by the hydrogenation of nitriles in a mixed solvent of a lower alcohol and a cyclic hydrocarbon in the presence of Raney nickel catalyst and an alkali metal hydroxide.
CONSTITUTION: Primary amines are prepared by hydrogenating nitriles in a mixed solvent of a lower alcohol and a cyclic hydrocarbon in the presence of a hydroxide or alcoholate of an akdali or alkaline-earth metal and Raney nickel or Raney cobalt catalyst. The alcohol is preferably a 1-5C aliphatic satyrated monohudric alcohol. Benzene, toluene, etc. may be cited, as the cyclic hydrocarbon, and mixing ratio of the alcohol to the cyclic hydrocarbon is preferably 0.25W1.5:1 (by volume). Generally the preferred amount of the mixed solvent is 5W100ml per 10g of the raw material nitriles. The amount of the catalyst is 0.5W50wt% based on the nitriles. The alkali is preferably NaOH, etc.
