Abstract

PURPOSE:After introduction of a gas of low water content for a prescribed time, the gases of starting materials are introduced into a quartz pipe, the reactor for synthesizing glass, thus making title glass fiber that is reduced in absorption caused by OH groups with good reproducibility. CONSTITUTION:A dried gas is sent from device for feeding dried gas 6 into quartz pipe 4 in which the dried gas is prepared by preheating a gas to reduce the water content or by heating the quartz pipe 4 with a burner to reduce the water content. The introduction of the dried gas is continued for more than 1 hr, preferably more than 3 hr. Then, the liquids of starting materials are gasified in bubblers 1, 2, and 3, which are used in the CVD process, and sent through pipes into quartz pipe 4, whereby fibers with low OH content, thus having absorption in the range from 0- 0.2 dB/km, are produced with good reproducibility.
