Abstract
PURPOSE: The direct esterification between terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol forms oligomers, which is decomposed with an excess amount of EG, then the polycondensation reaction is effected, thus producing polyester with high transparency and polymerization degree.
CONSTITUTION: To bishydroxyethyl terephthalate (BHET) oligomers resulting from the direct esterification of terephthalic acid (TPA) with EG are continuously added a slurry of EG/TPA at a molar ratio of less than 1.2/1.0 and they are heated. The newly formed BHET is separated and transferred to the polycondensation tank and EG is added so that EG/TPA molar ratio becomes 1.2W2.0. Thus, polyester with a diethylene glycol content of less than 2% and high polymerization degree is obtained.
