Abstract

PURPOSE: The use of 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(ethylhexanoylperoxy)hexance as a polymerization initiator gives high-molecular-weight styrene polymers at relatively low temperatures at high polymerization rates.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction between 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(hydroperoxy)hexane disodium salt and 2-ethylhexanoyl chloride is effected in an aqueous medium to prepare 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(2-ethylhexanoylperoxy)hexane, which functions as styrene polymerization initiator at low temperatures to increase the polymerization rate to an adequate level and give high-molecular-weight polymers. In the two-stage suspension polymerization, the first step at 70W90°C for 5W6 hr and the second step at about 110°C for 3W4 hr, the amount of the initiator used is suitably 0.0005 W0.025 mol per liter of styrene.
