Abstract
PURPOSE:On the surface of bare fiber for core part is formed the clad layer of lower refractive index than that of the core part by a specific method, thus making the boundary surface between core and clad parts extremely clear to form high-quality optical fiber free from defect in refractive index profile. CONSTITUTION:Parent material for core part 21 prepared from high-purity quartz glass is formed into fiber core using high frequency induction furnace 23 and a fine powder of silica doped with boron by the flame hydrolysis method using a ring type oxyhydrogen burner on the surface of the fiber. The fine powder then is heated in electric furnace 27, sintered and glassified and integrated with the core part. Then, the resulting fiber is coated with a polymer by polymer coater 28, passed through electric furnace 29, taken out by device 30 and wound on drum. The formation of the clad layer may be effected by glassifying directly the clad material on the surface of the core and coating with the plastic.
