Abstract
PURPOSE:To produce a semipermeable membraneous product with superior mechanical strength and semipermeability by forming a keratin-contg. substance, into a membraneous shape, subjected to decomposition with an enzyme and reduction. CONSTITUTION:To 1 part by wt. of a keratin-contg. substance such as wool, hair or feathering are added 0.1-0.5 part of an enzyme-decomposing enzyme such as papain or ficin, 0.1-0.5 part of an activating agent such as cystine and 20-100 parts of water. The resulting soln. is adjusted to pH 6-7 and decomposed with the enzyme at 30-65 deg.C for 30 min-8 hr to obtain a finely divided decomposition product. The product is then reduced with a reducing agent such as thioglycolic acid in a liquid medium such as water stable to reduction and having an affinity for the keratin-contg. substance. A soln. of the reduced substance in a solvent such as formic acid is spread on a substrate such as glass plate, and the solvent is evaporated to produce a desired semipermeable membraneous product.
